lyrics

Betty

Here comes the paperboy
With a glance at the trees
Betty is watching him
As he peddles away

She picks it up and holds it tight
She feels the emptiness
Looks into the photograph
That has made front page…

She was the lonely child
of a broken home
Betty is not too brave
She seldom goes outside

She has a fear of the world
That has passed her by
She doesn’t know
Where she must go

She had a love affair
many years ago
It ended suddenly
and she was left alone

It broke her heart and soul
when she called his name
Now she hides herself
with the grief and shame

Why are you silent
Her eyes seem to say
Why did I fall in love
At an early age?

Betty is reading now
all about the pain
the suffering of children
all across the world

She wants to have a child
someone she can hold
a little girl who knows
more than she dared

Why are you silent
Her eyes seem to say
Why did I fall in love
At an early age?
